ingenious staircase

I found this home, I believe, in House & Garden magazine several years ago. Ever since then I have wanted to do this to my stairs and I finally decided I'm going to. Our stairs are already white. My husband said he didn't care as long as he doesn't get stuck doing it. (I tend to start projects and never finish them...)
